Selecting the right carpet can be a big challenge. There are so many decisions to make, from the style of carpet, to color, and of course, carpet fiber. Our experts at Floor Coverings International Columbia East have compiled some information about popular carpet fibers to help you decide what is right for your Columbia home.
At the low end of the price spectrum, polypropylene carpet, also called olefin, is a fiber commonly used in basements, apartments and commercial spaces. It offers superior stain resistance and it is extremely colorfast. It is relatively easy to clean and stands up against moisture, mildew and shedding. It does have a tendency to crush under heavy furniture and foot traffic, but the low cost makes it easy to replace as necessary.
Like polypropylene, polyester carpets are stain and fade resistant. They resist wear and tear a bit better than the above, but are still prone to crushing over time. Polyester is available is a wide variety of beautiful color variations, making it a popular option from a style and décor perspective. Polyester is typically sold with high-density construction, and low-density options should be avoided, as they will easily flatten out.
The majority of carpets sold in the U.S. are nylon. This fiber delivers excellent performance at a good price. It has good stain resistance, high twist hold, and resiliency, meaning it will resist heavy traffic and normal wear and tear better than polypropylene or polyester. Nylon is the strongest of all the fibers listed here, and it is an excellent option for homes and businesses alike.
Wool is a traditional favorite and has been used for carpets and rugs for generations. This premium fiber comes with a hefty price tag, however. It is very resilient and durable. It also cleans well and is available is a wide array of beautiful colors. Wool pile can wear down over time resulting in “bald spots,” and its tendency to hold water makes is susceptible to mold and mildew. The soft feel and natural benefits of this carpet make it a popular option, however, despite the drawbacks.
